Browning a5 magnum serial numbers.
Anyways, I just bought a Belgian A5 Light Twenty but it has a few curious traits. First off, the serial number is 5Z 95571. Not exactly sure what to make of the "Z". I've seen some things say it was the "lightweight" designation for these years but most things say "G" was the lightweight designation. (FWIW, I do think this is a light twenty.)

I believe "BROWNING" replaced "FABRIQUE NATIONALE" on the receiver of World Market guns in 1948 or '49.Rudolph31 .30-06. 1930 is the correct year for the receiver. That's the easy part. Auto-5 serial numbers ran concurrently for the 12 gauge until 1957. After that Browning imports used letter prefixes to differentiate the various models. Sometime after 1957 FN also changed how they marked World Market guns.This dating system is for Browning firearms manufactured after 1958. Most early Browning serial numbers contained no date or model information and can not be dated using this system. 1958 to 1968 - The last digit of the year was used. Your serial number prefix "68Z" indicates a Light 20, NOT a Magnum 20. As for value, that's a crapshoot. More information and some additional good quality pictures would help in that quest. I believe that the Light 20 is highly desirable, much more so than the ubiquitous Light Twelve or Magnum Twelve and would command a premium price.
